On the New Year’s Eve of 1900, a dangerous bandit, Meagal- exandros, escapes from prison. Heading his men he abducts a group of British aristoctrats and keeps them hostages in his vil- lage, demanding from the government amnesty for himself and his men and land for the peasants. The peasants, who have formed a model community, herald him as a liberator. The harmonious relationship among bandits and peasants does not last long. Me- galexandros will execute the teacher, his stepdaughter, and the English hostages. In the deserted village square, the soldiers have taken control, Megalexandros has been turned into stone, and the young Alexander, heads for city riding a mule.
