The director’s first work, revealing his mystical, unique style, seems to creep out from the primeval night. A lonesome man is our guide to his dark universe: a driver who follows the route of the Tour de France, periodically stopping off to pick up and brutally kill prostitutes. During a rain storm, he runs into a young woman, Claire, whose car has broken down, and offers her a lift. On their trip, they won’t exchange many words, but they will share all the secrets of human nature. “And its he who gives to Claire the light… Jean brings her back to the world, he who gives death brings her back to life.” (Philippe Grandrieux, 1996)
