At Catagna in the south of Italy, women admire and fantasize about Antonio, considering him to be a Don Juan. Like his parents, what they do not know is that he has returned to his hometown from Rome due to his impotence. An arranged marriage with the local notary’s daughter, which the young man concedes to having fallen in love with the pretty girl through a photograph of hers, gets him in matrimony with her but also facing his greatest fear. Can he prove worthy of his descent, his sex, his legend?

Mauro Bolognini

Mauro Bolognini was born in 1922. He studied architecture in Florence, and set design and direction at Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. Apart from his over 30 films, initially collaborating with Pasolini on script, he also worked in theatre, opera and TV. Il Bell’Antonio is considered his masterpiece. He died in 2001.
