“Revolution is an image. The question is how to turn an image to reality.” These words belong to the 78-year-old Japanese director Masao Adachi, a radical activist and avant-garde filmmaker. The answer to his question comes through an experimental documentary by Philippe Grandrieux that appears in all his cinema: How do you film a living body? The two directors, who met in Tokyo in 2008, instantly shared a communion and decided to direct each other’s portraits. While filming Adachi, Mr. Grandrieux was usually unaware of what precisely he was saying because of the lag time for translation. But no less in his narrative films, he was guided by feelings, intuition, sensations. “What I wanted to show is that cinema is not fixed,” he concluded. “It’s some- thing that moves from one filmmaker to another.”
