Shot in Portugal and Japan, the film records life of Wenceslau de Moraes, the great Portuguese, who was born in Lisbon and died in Tokushima. The Island of Love is taken from the title of the famous chapter in The Lusiads, the epic poem by Luiz Vaz de Camões.

“We must celebrate this comeback while of course remembering the radical modernity of this immense gesture of poetic and operatic cinema [...]. A ‘tour de force’ prepared throughout a decade and a half, this film is a hub for the directions that guide Paulo Rocha’s work, a founder of the Portuguese ‘New Cinema’ and someone who always felt attracted to the extreme urges of popular culture, cinema, but also Asian culture, especially Japanese.”

José Manuel Costa, Director of Cinemateca Portuguesa
