“It would have been strange if in an era when the popular art par excellence, the cinema, is a book of images, the poets had not tried to compose images for the more meditative and refined minds which are not content with the crude imaginings of film makers. These will become more perceptive, and one could predict that there will come a day that the photograph and the cinema having become the only publishing forms in use, the poets will enjoy a freedom heretofore unknown.” Exactly one century since Guillaume Apollinaire’s prediction (The New Spirit and the Poets, 1918), the Picture Book by Jean Luc Godard declares this new liberty. Against the Book of Words, against the Biblos, rises the Film. But what are the differences? While the Bibloi prescribe and command, does the Picture Book, in asserting its insurrectional character against the flow of real History, claim to be a liberator? In an attempt to derail the train of History, to confuse the rail- road junctions, to reboot the geopolitical imaginary, The Picture Book, a treatise and an affront, offers a bomb of humanism at a time of accelerated political regression.
