Unrest is the third movement of a triptych by Philippe Grandrieux whose common thread is anxiety. The theme of Unrest is “la petite mort.” The theme of this trilogy is “bare life.” “The Greeks [...] used two terms [for life]: zoē [‘bare life’], which expressed the simple fact of living common to all living beings (animals, men, or gods), and bios [‘qualified life’], which indicated the form or way of living proper to an individual or a group.” It was in the context of this concept of “bare life” as devel- oped by Giorgio Agamben that I wanted to come closer to a body that stands outside of any symbolic taxonomy that would trace upon that body the lines of our affiliation to the human community; to come clos- er to the living, to life – “bigger, stronger than everything” – that gathers together in one opacity, one enigma, the destiny of men and animals.
